5 WAYS PARENTS DISCONNECT FROM THEIR KIDS... AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

"Staying connected" to our kids is an essential element in successful parenting. Due to factors like self esteem struggles and pressures from the peer group, kids "act out" and parents "disconnect". We will explore the common ways we as parents disconnect, creating a big struggle in our parenting efforts, and we will consider effective and practical tools to keep us connected!

PARENT PROJECT: CHANGING DESTRUCTIVE ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOR

This is an interactive class that provides parents tools to effectively deal with destructive behaviors in their teen. The class will help parents answer difficult questions, learn solutions, receive emotional and practical support, create an action plan, and experience success for improving teens' school attendance and performance. Audience: Adults over age 18 only. Teresa LeMay has 9 years of teaching experience in the Pleasanton and Livermore school districts. She holds a Credential in the area of Severe Disabilities and currently teaches children with disabilities in Pleasanton. She is the single parent of two teenagers enrolled in this district, with first-hand knowledge of the problems and joys of raising teens in these times. PARENTING YOUR ANXIOUS CHILD FREE

Parenting an anxious child is not easy, but anxious children can be helped to overcome their fears, and parents play an important part in the solutiion. Dr. Tompkins describes the nature of childhood anxiety and describes several strategies for parenting the anxious child. Special attention is given to helping the clingy child, the shy child and the worrier.

THE POWER OF GREEN AND RED LANGUAGE FREE

This class will teach parents a new way of communicating and will include practice in replacing everyday Red Language pitfalls with Green Language alternatives. Green Language is a type of communication that is free of the kinds of words that can imply negative or judgmental references. Red Language is a habitual way of speaking and thinking that raises stress levels and leads to control-ing and out-of-control behavior.

This class will teach you very practical skills to end the power struggles with your strong-willed child and build good child behavior. Based on Behavior Science, it will teach you how to create cooperation and motivation in your child. Parents regularly report, “This stuff really works.”

UNDERSTANDING AUTISM: PARENTING A CHILD WITH AUTISM/ASPERGER'S DISORDER

This class is for parents who have a child diagnosed with Autism/Asperger’s Disorder. Parents will learn facts and common misconceptions about their child’s diagnosis. Strategies and techniques for dealing with negative behavior at home, at school, and in the community will be discussed. Parents will also learn how to increase positive interactions and see greater possibilities for their child with peers, siblings, and themselves. Early intervention strategies and resources for parents will be offered. This class builds Family Support and Self-esteem assets. Suggested audience: adults over age 18. Christopher Brown, M. A. MFT Intern, has a decade of experience working with children, teens, families, adults, and couples. He is currently a school counselor in Livermore, and has a private practice providing psychotherapy in Pleasanton. Christopher also works with Hoofprints on the Heart, a non-profit adaptive horse riding center in Livermore, providing social skills groups and support to families with children diagnosed with Autism and Asperger’s Disorders.
